[{"content":"The first step to building the ROV is to waterproof the ESCs. Two of them are 20A water-cooled ESCs. These are for the main drive motor. I have experimented with many different setups and configurations. I have tried all the major video systems, Analog, HDzero DJI and Walksnail. I currently only use Analog/HDzero since they are perfectly good for flying and especially with analog is cheap and flexible which is good for messing around with things. Each drone(except for the whoop) is custom built with a variety of different parts. I enjoy mixing and matching and trying different things. I have also experimented with GPS for GPS rescue which saved my drone a couple times!\nTiny Whoop 2 in with HDzero 3.5 in Main 5 in with HDzero Long Range 7 in ","date":"26 October 2026","externalUrl":null,"permalink":"/projects/fpv_drones/fpv_drone_collection/","section":"Projects","summary":"","title":"FPV drone Collection","type":"projects"},{"content":"This is Explorer 1. My surface ship for all things ROV. It will serve as a platform for depth testing individual parts, it will be what the sub will be tethered to during operation and may be able to assist in rescue operations!\nIt is a catamaran style ship with differential steering, water cooled ESCs and the receiver/ video transmitter can control both itself and the attached ROV. In fact it was one of my first projects about 8 years ago(the ESC lasted about 5 seconds and thus ended my submarine adventures). A couple years ago I got into FPV drones. This was a lot of fun and more successful, however there was only so much you can do. ROVs on the other hand have endless possibilities and pose a significantly higher engineering challenge(and as bonus if they fail they wont fall on anyone or catch a field on fire!)\nFor this ROV I am going for a tether controlled, deep diving approach. The ROV will employ a combination of sealed air compartments and epoxy potted parts. The Sub will carry its own battery, have 3 water cooled ESCs and will communicate both video and control signals to the surface via tether. A side View of the CAD model The Control Scheme The depth target is ~50ft(as that\u0026rsquo;s how long my current tether is). However if it operates at this depth further testing will be conducted. The Explorer 1 can provide a platform to depth test the seals without the electronics enclosed.\nThere are some downsides to a tether, it has limited range and can get tangled on things near the shore. To help negate this the ROV will be tethered to Explorer 1 my surface ship, from there it will be able to be controlled with the same controller as the ship and transmit its video wirelessly. This means it operates flawlessly with RC drone/plane equipment and the sub can be taken out to the diving area without a long cable from the shore.\n","date":"20 October 2026","externalUrl":null,"permalink":"/projects/rov_diving1/project_overview/","section":"Projects","summary":"","title":"ROV Project Overview","type":"projects"},{"content":"My name is Luke Stearman and this is a place I built to document and share my projects.
